Give the gift of reading motivation by sponsoring one or more Idita-Read Teams in your choice of K-12 schools, after-school programs, library reading groups, home school associations, etc. Sponsoring a team costs less than $12 per month for the three-month activity that can serve up to 50 students. Businesses, PTAs, organizations, or individuals interested in sponsoring a team are encouraged to either contact a known teacher or librarian to suggest team sponsorship or contact WW IDEA, who can find a group needing sponsorship.
Idita-Read.org provides a special learning opportunity, allowing participants of all reading levels to engage in a learning activity with a variety of other students living in different locations worldwide. In the last two races, parents and teachers especially remarked how the online activity spurred their students to read more than they ever had before. This makes your sponsorship a truly meaningful and life-long gift. "My mushers just started yesterday," one teacher emailed event coordinator Lisa Kerscher during the 2009 race, "and I think they’ve probably already read more for Idita-Read than they have all year!"
Sponsoring a team is one way to show community support and get recognized, while providing a tangible, exciting activity that inspires students to read more. Plus, Idita-Read.org actively encourages learning about related science, social studies, and art topics. It also promotes key 21st-century skills and writing practice through book review sharing. Integration of these supporting activities is highlighted in the website’s Racing Kit and Event Blog.
WW IDEA, a Montana-based K-12 educational 501(c)3 nonprofit, developed and runs the online, interactive reading-incentive race, and we invite you to explore the Idita-Read.org website to see how this online activity encourages reading skills and frequency, while being fun and motivating. Based on the Iditarod Trail Race, student mushers get their own site logins to log reading "mileage", can zoom into satellite maps of their nearest checkpoint to see what the landscape is like "on the ground", and submit their own book reviews to share with other students. Students living in states from Alaska to Florida, and in countries from the U.S. to Japan, "compete" against each other in this multi-week race.
